I always use all natural soda. Skipped the buns and did a side of steamed broccoli with some blue cheese dressing. Super easy. Interesting flavors. We ate them open-faced with some fresh fruit on the side. Very filling. Will make again. Wow, 11 years of comments in one thread! Why Are They Called Sloppy Joes?

Of, for that matter, the other sandwich , a double-decked cold cut sandwich, found in parts of New Jersey, which isn't really as common as that article makes it seem. Heck, I never heard of it until I saw it here, and I've been a New Jersey resident my whole life; it's not really even a statewide thing, just a few places in Central Jersey. I am Scottish and when I was a boy in the early 's a 'sloppy joe' was a popular type of leisure shirt at the time.

Inever had one myself, but a few of my friends did. It was a bit like a sweatshirt, ie long-sleeved, made of cotton but more substantial material than a tee-shirt. I think it had a fleecy inside. The main thing I remember is that it was yellow and the round collar band also had a vee section below the collar front. I seem to recall that sloppy joes could be bought in Woolworths. Um, the picture of the Sloppy Joe and potato chips could really be any sandwich for all you can tell, as you can't see what's between the buns. The picture really oughta be replaced. It is a really bad picture that doesn't really help with a description of what the sandwich should look like.

I'll try to fix that as soon as I can. However, I've never heard of one with turkey -- as far as I know they're always made with some kind of mammal, and usually bovine at that either roast beef, corned beef, tongue, or other cow-meat. Can anyone settle this? Menelaos , 1 June UTC.

Is it really necessary to say that the meat can be replaced with textured vegetable protein? This is true of any and every sandwich, and continues to appear on their articles by the dozen.

Badagnani talk , 18 June UTC. Or Sloppy Joes? Removed advert for a commercial variant of this "food". Isn't there a urban legend that popped up that said it got its name from a butcher who served his cheating wife and her love to their families? Now i know wikipedia doesn't allow speculation but isn't it at least worth noting?

Yami talk , 11 September UTC. It would be interesting to note the commonalities and differences in the article and related articles , and put it in the ragout dishes category. This looks a helluva lot like vandalism. I'm going to remove it, if no-one objects. Of course, it's not! I'm still going to remove it. I'm thinking we need to see some references for the section US variations on the term - even if the source is simply a restaurant menu or a locally published cookbook, it'd be better than nothing. The first external link is broken. I am new here so I am not making changes myself. I want to do a little self education before editing. So, can the person who created the link or someone who knows the proper URL please fix it. So it's literally just Bolognese on bread? This should be noted, because a lot of people will already know about bolognese and bread! When I read the first line of the article, it sounds like a Sloppy joe made anywhere but the United States wouldn't be a Sloppy joe; I'm certain there's a better way to word it.

The BEST Homemade Sloppy Joes - The Chunky Chef

Isslwc talk , 17 April UTC. There was a once famous bar in Havana known as Sloppy Joe's , supposedly nicknamed for its generally unkempt condition. That bar existed at least as far back as the early s; I came across a reference to it while reading about the early U. Curious about the bar's name, I also found out that one of their popular dishes was a sandwich made from the Cuban dish ropa vieja , a description of which sounds a lot like a prototypical "sloppy joe" filling.

Thus it seems quite likely to me that the sandwich got its name from the bar. However, I freely admit that my musings don't even rise to the level of Original Research—more like Original Speculation. Hence, I'm hoping that an intrepid sandwich historian might be able to dig up something more concrete.
